The task of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (TLL) project is to compile the first comprehensive scholarly dictionary of ancient Latin from its beginnings until 600 CE. The work is based on an archive of approximately 10 million slips, which takes account of all surviving texts and is constantly updated. The older texts are covered word for word, the later ones mostly with a selection of lexicographically significant examples. Modern data technology is also used. The first fascicle appeared in 1900, and more than two thirds of the work is now available in both printed and digital form.

Around 20 Latinists from Germany and abroad work on the Thesaurus. Some of them are scholarship holders, whose temporary employment on the dictionary also furthers their own education. The archive of slips and the unique institute library are used by scholars from all over the world. Founded by the five academies of the German-speaking world which existed at the time, the Thesaurus has been an international enterprise since 1949, in which 33 academies and scholarly societies from four continents are currently involved.
