Finance and Business Research from a Long-Term Perspective: Utilizing Historical German Financial Market and Corporate Data

Links to the project

Analyzing the long-term development of the financial system contributes to a better understanding of current and future challenges in economy and society. However, there is a lack of consistent, long-term data, particularly in the corporate sector and its interaction with the financial system and society.

Long-term financial and corporate research to date has primarily used data from the USA. Applying these findings to other systems and structures, such as those in continental European countries, would carry the risk of misinterpretation due to fundamentally different institutions and cultures.

The project's goal is to create structured and interconnected research data containing corporate information and financial metrics of German real and financial economy enterprises over a long period (from 1871). Thereby, we  secure the data as part of the cultural heritage and  make it available for financial research up to the present.

On the basis of this data, a research program focusing on a broad range of financial-historical and long-term perspective topics has been implemented. The unique aspects of Germany’s development during the observation period (e.g., significant changes in the financial system, hyperinflation, and various crises) provide valuable insights into the challenges of the financial system and related economic policy measures.
