The aim of the project of the Saxon Academy of Sciences “Europäische Traditionen - Enzyklopädie jüdischer Kulturen” is the development and conceptual penetration of Jewish life worlds in Europe from the early modern period to the middle of the 20th century. It is based on the “Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture”. Completed in 2017, the work, which contains around 800 articles in seven volumes and also appears in English translation, explores phenomena of the transition from pre-modern to modernity.

The history of the experience of the Jewish population is understood here as being seismographic for the challenges and upheavals of modernity. This focus also applies to the two other publication formats of the project. The series of editions “Library of Jewish History and Culture” offers a targeted selection of little-known, inaccessible or unpublished works on the political and knowledge history of the Jews. The series “Archive of Jewish History and Culture” brings together sources on specific questions and topics of Jewish political experience in the 19th and 20th centuries.
