Academy

Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities

founded in 1909

The Academy is situated in the former grand ducal palace below the Heidelberg Castle.

The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities was constituted in 1909 and since that time has always been committed to its founding idea of assembling the land’s eminent scientists for the purpose of interdisciplinary discussion and independent research. Today it remains a scholarly society and a modern non-university research institution in one. It organises scientific conferences and public lectures und promotes young scientists through programmes such as the WIN-Kolleg and through the awarding of research prizes.

The Academy adopts researchers who have accomplished a distinguished scientific output as ordinary fellows.

At present the Academy is running 22 research projects, which cover a broad range of disciplines and include the production of a commentary on the major works of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, bringing together, systemizing and adding to previously existing research findings.

Another research project, „The Role of Culture in Early Expansions of Humans“, focuses on the reconstruction of the spatiotemporal patterns of migration of the hominine in Africa, Asia and Europe between 3 Million and 20.000 years ago, and sheds light on the natural and cultural preconditions of their expansion. Further projects include the documentation of Buddhist engravings in northern China and literary cuneiform texts from Assur, which provide accessibility to global cultural heritage extending back millennia.
