The German Academy for Language and Literature

The German Academy for Language and Literature is the only association in the German-speaking world which devotes itself exclusively to German language and literature.

Together with the German Academy for Language and Literature, the Union of Academies and its Report on the State of the German Language engage in public discussion on the development of the German language and supply scholarly information concerning this field. The first two Reports were published in 2013 and 2017 on the topics, the “Wealth and Poverty of German” and the “Diversity and Unity of German” respectively. A third Report on the topic “German in Schools” is currently in production.

Max Weber Foundation

Together with the Max Weber Foundation, the Union of Academies conducts the event series Humanities in Dialogue, at which current questions in science, culture and community are discussed.

A podium of experts from various disciplines discusses central themes of the present and future in direct dialogue with the audience. The goal of the series is to offer a discussion forum for exchange between various fields of research and between researchers and the public.

GThe Humanities in Dialogue occurs several times throughout the year across the nation and in many locations. It was initiated in 1993 by the Union of Academies. From 2001 until 2012 the Leibniz Association participated in the forum as a project partner. Since 2015, the Max Weber Foundation has been the leading organiser. The Minister of Education and Research, Anja Karliczek, is the patron of the Humanities in Dialogue series.

Council for German Orthography

The Council for German Orthography is the authoritative agency in questions concerning German orthography.

The Council for German Orthography is an intergovernmental committee, which was trusted by state departments to preserve the uniformity of orthography in the German-speaking world and to further develop orthography on the basis of orthographic guidelines with tremendous breadth. Since its founding, the Union of Academies has been a member of the Council for German Orthography and is represented there by Professor Hans-Joachim Solms (Professor for the History of German and Medieval and Early Modern German Literature at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig).

Schering Foundation

DThe Union of the Academies and the Schering Foundation illuminated the world of senses and their influence on our communal life across four theme nights in their collective series “With All Senses: How we live together”. Artistic perspectives were also incorporated at the respective interdisciplinary podiums. Two events took place in cooperation with the Museum for Communication Berlin.

Standing Committee

Within the framework of its standing committee, the Union of Academies, together with Leopoldina and acatech, engages in research-based political and societal consultancy.

In a time of continuous change, politics and society are often forced to make reasonable decisions quickly. For this reason, the demand for reliable bases for making these kinds of decisions is growing rapidly. Together with national and international partners, the Union of Academies has taken upon itself the urgent task of providing accessible, reliable, nonpartisan information on the current status of related research in the humanities and natural sciences in order to highlight the relevance and application of this in relation to today’s societal challenges. The standing committee meets once every three months to discuss the topics to be delegated to the collaborative working groups that produce position statements and recommendations.

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation

is an internationally renowned cultural institution and an important agent in the humanities and social sciences.

Together with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Union of Academies, partly with its own events, engages in the Science Years of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research in topics including “Future Project EARTH”, “The Demographic Shift”, “Digital Society” and “Future City”.

Stiftung Neue Verantwortung

The Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV) is an independent think tank that develops concrete ideas of how German politics can shape the technological transition in society, economics and state.

The Union of Academies has been a member of the Stiftung Neue Verantwortung since 2007. The SNV is supported by businesses, foundations and both public and private patrons. The foundation works primarily with the thematic focuses of digital infrastructure and IT security, working environments in transition, and energy and resources. On these subject areas, the experts of the SNV produce analyses, develop political recommendations and organise events.

Wissenschaft im Dialog

Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) is a non-profit organisation, which was founded in 1999 with an initiative of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft by the largest German research organisations.

Wissenschaft im Dialog aims to rouse and strengthen interest in research topics among people of all age groups and educational backgrounds. For these purposes, WiD organises discussions, school projects, exhibitions and competitions around research and science. The Union of Academies cooperates with Wissenschaft im Dialog within the framework of the following projects:

The internet video competition Fast Forward Science calls upon researchers, internet video makers, artists and communicators, or simply those interested in science, to submit extraordinary videos concerning current research topics. The challenge: to simultaneously entertain and be scientifically sound and understandable. The competition takes place annually.

Constructive discussions about controversial topics concerning science and research: This is what it’s about in the interactive discussion events by Controversial Science. The series brings citizens together with scientists in conversation, all around the nation. A dialogue on equal terms promotes mutual understanding and encourages reflection.

For the series Interview with a Picture – a video project that was conducted within the framework of Science Year 2016/17 - Sees and Oceans – internet videos were made, in which world-famous paintings told their stories. A reporter elicits from the artwork everything there is to know about the themes of the Science Year. Sometimes storms, sometimes floods, then about climate change and waterways.
