The Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities (registered association)

"The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Saxonian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg have joined forces to form a combined conference. They have decided that this conference shall have the legal form of a registered association and have therefore devised new statutes to replace those of 23 May 1973. By resolution passed on 4 December 1998 the conference bears the name ‘Union’.” (excerpt from the statutes)

By resolution of the general meeting of 1 December 2006, the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg became a member of the Union on 1 January 2007.

The Board of the Union consists of the president and the vice-president. The president handles the affairs of the Union and, together with the vice-president, represents the Union externally. The work of the Board is supported by the Union’s Head Office.

General Assembly

The Union’s membership consists of the eight German academies of sciences and humanities. The general assembly of the Union receives and approves the report of the executive board, establishes the budget and also decides on the admission of new members and on any amendments to the statutes.

Scientific Commission

The Union’s scientific commission is the central advisory body on all scientific questions concerning the Academies’ Programme. Each member academy delegates an expert to the scientific commission. Further members of the commission include the same number of representatives chosen by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) as well as one non-voting representative of each federal state and one representing the federal government. Furthermore there is a representative of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina as a guest.

Patristic Commission

The academies of sciences and humanities host important research conducted on the writings and teachings of the Church Fathers. The Patristic Commission was founded in 1960/61 by the Working Group of the (West German) academies of sciences and humanities. It is now jointly run by all eight academies of sciences and humanities. The Commission’s main task is to coordinate and supervise the work undertaken within the academies, as well as to publish the Patristische Texte und Studien (“Patristic Texts and Studies”) series. Further information on the patristic research projects can be found in the academy yearbooks.

Committee for Musicological Editions

The Committee for Musicological Editions was set up in 1976 to coordinate complete historical and critical editions of musical works and composers. The Committee is made up of the president of the Union, the president of the lead academy, one representative from each of the Union’s member academies, and the president of the Society for Music Research. The Committee also has the right to co-opt up to three musicologists who are not academy members. The task of the Committee is to coordinate long-term musicological projects. It reports on the results and requirements of the projects in its charge and also furnishes advice and expertise on musicological projects and editorial questions relating thereto.
