The Academies' Programme
Retrieving Our Cultural Heritage from the Past, Bringing It to Bear on the Present, and Preserving It for the Future
The Academies' Programme aims at retrieving our cultural heritage from the past, bringing it to bear on the present, and preserving it for the future. It is one of the Federal Republic of Germany's most comprehensive research programmes in the humanities. Coordinated by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities, it supports long-term basic research projects mostly in the humanities but also in the natural sciences.

Within the framework of the Academies' Programme, coordinated by the Union , a total of more than 800 employees are working on 152 projects (as of 2012), which are supervised by ordinary and corresponding fellows of the academies and by scientific experts from outside the academies. Evaluation is carried out at regular intervals in order to ensure the high quality of the dictionaries, encyclopaedias and editions that are in progress in the fields of theology, philosophy, history, literature and linguistics, art history and archaeology, inscription studies and onomastics as well as musicology and long-term observations in the natural sciences. It is only thanks to the structure of the research units in the academies and the commissions supervising them that such long-term and large-scale research projects can be carried out to a high standard of quality over long periods of time without being restricted by the lifetimes of individual persons and by the limited capacities of institutions.

Only recently, the Academies' Programme has been evaluated favourably by the Wissenschaftsrat (German Science Council), which has stated that the projects run within the Academies' Programme frequently are hubs of worldwide research on the topics under investigation, that the research carried out is remarkable both in terms of quantity and quality, and that the paramount merit of the Academies' Programme continues to lie in the research results it contributes to the empirical groundwork of subjects such as philosophy, history, theology, and philology.
